Air Source Heat Pump Installation

Looking to cut out your carbon emissions and save money in the long term? Air Source Heat Pumps supplied and fitted by Finbra are an efficient way to save energy and money.

What is an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the outside air to heat your home and water - they’re a great low-carbon way of heating your home. Heat can still be extracted when air temperatures are as low as - 25°C. An air-source pump is highly efficient as even though it needs electricity to run, it typically uses less electrical energy than the heat it produces, therefore making it very energy efficient - a greener equivalent to traditional boiler heating systems

Air source Heat Pumps Installation

Air source heat pumps are simple to install, one of our qualified installers here at Finbra can help you with the installation process. Firstly, you will need to register the energy device with your Distribution Network Operator, who is responsible for bringing electricity to your home. One of our qualified installers will do that for you.

Once registered, we’ll turn up with all the required equipment to complete the job efficiently and we’ll also leave your garden how we’ve found it - clean! No external digging outside your property will be required but the air source heat pump unit will need to be located somewhere outside your property with good airflow. Once the air source heat pump has been installed, we’ll test the new heating system and we’ll explain to you how it works and all the controls. We’ll also answer any questions you may have for you to get the most out of your air source heat pump.

How long does installation take?

When it comes to how long it takes to install an air source heat pump, it all depends on the size of your property. The bigger the property the longer it will take but typically the installation takes around a week.

How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

An air source heat pump takes heat from the outside air and transfers the heat to the heating system in your home. How exactly do air source heat pumps work? We’ve got you covered with these easy-to-digest steps:

Step 1. The air source heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air into a liquid refrigerant.

Step 2. The gas is then compressed and heated

Step 3. This heat is then transferred to your home’s heating and hot water system.

There Are Two Main Types of Air Source Heat Pumps

Air to Water Heat Pumps

Air to water heat pumps take heat from the outside and transfer it to water, which is then fed into your wet central heating system. The heat which is then created via the air to water heat pump can be used to heat up radiators, underfloor heating, and as a hot water supply for your home.

Air to Air Heat Pumps

Air to air to heat pumps takes air from the outside via a compressor and the heat is then extracted from the air and pumped to the house. Air to air heat pumps can also cool your house in the summer months. This method of heating is very efficient as it can generate up to 4.5 times the energy which it consumes.

On The 5 Questions You MUST ASK Before Getting A Ground Or Air Source Heat Pump For Your Home

Advantages and Disadvantages of Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps can require little maintenance and are very efficient but that doesn’t mean air source heat pumps are perfect. Here are some key advantages and disadvantages:

  • Energy-efficient, reducing your carbon footprint

  • Air to water heat pumps automatically qualify you for the Renewable Heat Incentive Grant, meaning you could receive a cash payment every year quarterly

  • Save money compared to a regular heating system

  • Generate more energy than the electricity which is consumed to operate

  • Can be used for heating and cooling

  • Low maintenance costs

  • Easy installation

  • Long lifespan

  • It can be easier to install than a ground source heat pump

  • Electricity is required to run an air source heat pump but this can be offset by linking to solar panels for greater efficiency and reduced running costs

Advantages and Disadvantages of Air Source Heat Pumps

Is an Air Source Heat Pump Suitable for me?

If you want to cut your carbon emissions and care about living sustainably, then you should consider investing in an air source heat pump. An air source heat pump is a more sustainable option compared to oil or gas heating. The electricity used by the air source heat pump is used more efficiently than any other heating system. Not only will you help towards creating a more sustainable future for yourself but you’ll also be helping lower your heating costs, which your wallet will thank you for.

Once you have decided to go for an air source heat pump, you’ll also need to consider whether it’s suitable not just for you but also for your home. These are the key things to consider:

  • Your property is well insulated and draught-proofed to help the efficiency of your air source heat pump and therefore keeping the costs of running low.

  • You will require some outside space for the air source heat pump unit to be fitted to an exterior wall. There must be enough space around the air source heat pump, to allow a good flow of air.

  • In most cases, an air source heat pump won’t require planning permission. However, it is best to check with your local planning authority first to find out if planning permission is required, even though the air source heat pumps don’t take up too much space.

How much do air source heat pumps cost?

The cost of an air source heat pump can vary, with prices starting from £10,000 depending on the size of your home. We will carry out a full MCS design and provide you with the estimated performance of your new system. And don’t forget that you can still apply for the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), a government-backed financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat.

You could benefit from quarterly payments for 7 years. For example, you may receive an estimated annual payment of £1,310 for a 2-3 bedroom house with the RHI Grant, saving you money in the long run.

Air Source Heat Pump Maintenance and Servicing

Air source heat pumps require relatively little maintenance except for an annual service. They can last as long as 20 to 25 years and typically come with up to 7 years of warranty depending on the manufacturer and 2 years workmanship warranty. An air source heat pump should be serviced annually, to maintain the warranty and to get optimum performance. An annual service is also a requirement for you to receive your Renewable Energy Incentive Grant. An annual service includes

  • Clean heating system filter

  • Clean coils and fans (if necessary)

  • Ensure proper air flow is not impeded by debris (leaves, dust etc.)

  • Power off the unit and check / clean fan blades.

  • Inspect filters, ducts, blower and indoor coil for dirt and other obstructions

  • Measure airflow is correct

  • Check heating system antifreeze level

  • Check for leaks
